I write this blog mostly for my entertainment. I suppose it's no different from keeping a journal or taking photos - it gives me a chance to sit back and reflect on my life. Sometimes life gets a little crazy, so it's nice to take a little time for yourself. When I used to commute to an office, it used to be the time on the train. When I retire, it'll be fun looking back on my poker days - assuming it doesn't end with me getting raped by durrr playing HU for rollz.
Since none of my close friends play poker, it also gives me an outlet to talk about poker. There are just some weird misconceptions about poker out there in the general public. Contrary to popular belief, you need an exceptional amount of mental and emotional discipline to be successful at poker. And yes - you can be a "good" person, a family man, and solid member of the community and still play poker for a living. I guess any readers above my family and close friends is all "gravy," but it's always nice when you have people who find what you're doing/writing interesting. My readers seem to fall into three groups: people who only want poker content, people who want everything BUT poker content and people who like the food pieces. My life is a balance of family, poker and food, so hopefully there is enough balance in the blog.
I didn't know much about blogging, so one of the first things I did was to get a "Blogging for Dummies" book. It helped me set up the blog and directed me to things I wouldn't have thought of, like looking at web site statistics - to tell you how many people (if any) come to visit your blog. There's a free web site called statcounter.com that allows you to keep track of various web site metrics. A fellow blogger asked me about blog traffic a few weeks ago, so in case anyone else is interested, this is what my statcounter summary looks like:
That spike in week 33 is from an online interview. PTR did an interview with RaiderDuck (one of the LifeFish guys) and one of the questions was: Q: 3 words of advice for any poker player A: read DoubleFly’s Blog
That's me!!! I enjoy writing my blog, but it sure feels good that others enjoy it too. Sure feels nice to be swimming in gravy.
