Ah...  another positive month in the books.  But this was a pretty crappy month - I didn't get a chance to play much, I made a bunch of -ev plays in large pots, and I ran below average.  Meh.  I also played a bunch of hands at 1/2 when I didn't feel like playing, just to get in my Ironman for the day (since I knew I would be away for 10 days).  Even that didn't go so well.  Oh well.

I can't believe it, but I actually "made weight" this month.  I'm now a svelte 253.7!!!  Since I had gained a few pounds on my 10 day trip, I didn't think I could lose over a pound a day, but I did.  And I didn't do anything cheezy like get in a sweat suit and try and dehydrate my way to the weight loss.  Altho I guess on a lot of "food diets," most of the early weight loss is mostly "water."  Anyway, I'm just going to do this low carb diet for 1-2 more weeks and gradually add back some of the healthier carbs.  Also, I'm going to have a ton of manual labor (packing, cleaning) to do related to the move, so I should be getting plenty of physical activity.

WHAT'S FOR DINNER

One of the great things about being on a low carb diet is that you get...  as Men the Master would say, "all you can eat, baby!"  And of awesome foods like this Stockyards bone-in PRIME dry aged ribeye. Normally, I guess my starch of choice would have been a mashed potato, but hey! when you have a *10*, who cares about pointy elbows?  God!  So awesome with a nice red wine...  Speaking of which, a glass of wine right now sounds awesome...

  1. When you say low carb, how low are we talking?...it helps you lose weight, but steals from your lean muscle mass as well. So, after you do a really low carb diet, you have a slightly skinnier, weaker version of your old self. Losing muscle mass to a diet is just not a smart idea. We need every ounce of muscle mass we can get as we age.

    Are you exercising?

  2. Anytime you go on a reduced calorie diet, you are subject to SOME muscle loss. The goal is to preserve as much muscle as possible while losing fat. A low carb diet is excellent for this.

  3. We need carbohydrates to function. If not consuming enough carbs, we enter gluconeogenesis and ketogenesis. Gluconeogenesis uses amino acids to make up for our lack of carbs. Using the body's amino acid stores is not healthy. Ketogenesis is fine for a while, but it's very easy to enter ketosis (build-up of ketone bodies in blood). Extremely low carb diets are NOT healthy and the fact they are even allowed to be advertised is amazing.

  4. Name one essential carbohydrate we need to function. Here's a clue: there aren't any. Sample low carb diet shopping list:
    1. Meat
    2. Fish
    3. Eggs
    4. Oil
    5. Veggies
    6. In season fruit
    7. Nuts
We get all the carbohydrates we need with some fresh fruits and vegetables.

Extremely high carbs diets are much worse than a low carb diet.

  5. We are in agreement, we need carbohydrates. When I hear the words "low carb diet" I get scared for the dieter. They (the person on the diet) need to be aware they need to eat carbs. Nowhere in the blog does it say he's eating enough carbs to not become gluconeogenic or ketotic.

Also, DoubleFly...your words of "all you can eat" scared the piss out of me too. That's not how it works and I assume you were being slightly sarcastic (I hope?).
