I barely made any money last month. But at least I didn't lose money!
{I can just hear Mrs. Fly saying, "That's loser talk!")
The first few days of the trip has been going okay so far - no one is getting too sick of the car ride (mostly because I'm limiting the drive to like 6 hours a day max), so that can only be considered a win. A few observations and anecdotes from the trip so far:
* I had been telling G for like 10 miles towards the end of Texas about how awesome the Mississippi River was going to be - how it's the largest river in the U.S., and how it's one of the great rivers of the world. I guess I remember driving across it when I was younger and thinking how huge it was. We start approaching the border of Texas and I see a bridge and I say, "look G! I think that's the Mississippi River!" We start crossing the bridge and G says, "The Mississippi River looks like a ditch!" And then I think about it and realize that if it's called the Mississippi River, it would most likely border... I dunno... maybe MISSISSIPPI?!? and not Texas and Louisiana. Ivy League 0, Common Sense 1.
* We stopped by The Horseshoe Casino in Shreveport and was pleasantly surprised at how nice the public areas were (I hear the guest rooms are old). The restaurants looked pretty good and the buffet was pretty nice (the food was a little tired tho, but maybe it was because it was a Monday lunch). I didn't realize the Horseshoe was owned by Caesar's (I am now a live noob and have no idea what is going on in the non-online world). I saw some thread on 2+2 saying the 'Shoe had the best poker room in Shreveport so I wanted to check it out. The poker room was pretty pathetic. Smoky as hell and there was only a NL300 game going during the day and apparently only NL500 games run in the evenings. The chance of me gambling there is zero, but it's possible Mrs. Fly & I may stop by for a food stop and a "night o' luvin." (I think Mrs. Fly just threw up)
* We drove into Grambling (site of the all-black Grambling University) to fill up on gas. It's been a looong time (like maybe a decade) since I had been to a gas station where the windows were covered with bars and gates. I dunno... when you are are college town, dedicated to nurturing the future generation of leaders, perhaps you can start by... I dunno... not robbing the local gas station!!! [x] In before racist ban.
* We skipped the Vicksburg Historical Site because we goofed around all day. Hey! It's a vacation, after all.
[x] Mississippi consistently one of the fattest states in the US - CONFIRMED. Mrs. Fly thought it was funny that the local KFC offered an all-you-can-eat buffet from 11AM to 9PM.
Stay tuned for more trip reports...
